Silver Palace - Amtrak Certified Vista Dome
The Silver Palace was built for the Western Pacific Railroad in 1948 as a 46 seat coach, with an additional 24 seats in the dome, for the famed California Zephyr. The car plied the scenic route between Chicago and Oakland, CA, for over two decades, until the train was discontinued in March 1970. As WP had no need for the car after the train was eliminated, the car migrated East and joined the fleet of the new, private Auto-Train Corporation, operating initially between northern Virginia and Florida and later, between Louisville, KY, and Florida.
After the demise of the original Auto-Train, the car was sold into private ownership and passed through several owners. The car was extensive remodeled as a lounge car for country western singer Merle Haggard but was then sold once again and its final assignment was on the Algoma Central Railway in Canada, toting passenger to and from the scenic Agawa Canyon north of Sault Ste. Marie.
The car was acquired by the Friends of the 261 in December 2017 and sold to Railexco in 2023. Silver Palace is fully Amtrak certified and is available for charter service nation-wide.
White Bear Lake - Amtrak Certified Lounge Car
The White Bear Lake, former Fox River Valley and Henry Hudson, was a parlor car built in 1952 by the Budd Company for the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Congressional service. It was acquired by Amtrak in 1971. In 1986 Amtrak converted the fox River Valley into a buffet/table car. After being sold by Amtrak, the car ran in charter service owned by Mid-America Railcar, wearing the names Henry Hudson and Keystone Grill. Paxrail acquired the car in October 2013 and renamed it Warriors Rest. Purchased in 2017 by the Friends of the 261, the Warriors Rest was extensively refurbished into a luxury lounge car and renamed the Fox River Valley. Railexco acquired the railcar in 2023 and renamed it White Bear Lake in 2024.
The White Bear Lake comfortably seats 46 passengers, with booth seating for 16. The car is decorated with floor to ceiling African mahogany and custom engraved glass half walls depicting the White Bear Lake’s corporate heritage. White Bear Lake has a wet bar and brand new restroom facilities.
The White Bear Lake is based in St Louis, fully Amtrak certified, and available for charter nationwide.
Swift Stream - Amtrak Certified Sleeper Lounge
The Swift Stream was built in 1949, part of an eleven-car order from the Budd Company in Philadelphia. The eleven car order from Budd was for a set of identical cars. Each featured 6 double bedrooms, a buffet (kitchen), and a 22-seat lounge. The cars were known collectively as the stream-series sleeper/lounges; each one featured “Stream” as part of its name.
The Swift Stream served the New York Central for almost two decades following the car’s 1949 construction. The stream-series cars were assigned to many different NYC trains, including the New England States, the Ohio State Limited, the Southwestern Limited, and others.
The Swift Stream outlasted the New York Central itself, going to the Penn Central in 1968, and then to Amtrak in 1971.
Railexco acquired the Swift Stream from a private owner in 2023.
In 2024 the Swift Stream was resold to The United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey, the operator of Hudson River Rail Excursions. Sip, eat, and relax aboard beautifully restored 1940s railroad cars from the long-lost New York Central Railroad. Your journey takes you on a land cruise along the majestic Hudson River as you take in sights and hundreds of years of history.
Effingham - Amtrak Certified Coach Car
Built by the Budd Company in 1952 for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a 60-seat coach, 14-seat lounge, and delivered for service on the Boston-Washington Senator. It was later converted into a straight coach and used on the Pennsylvania’s Clocker service (although PRR never used the name, it was unofficial until Amtrak formally adopted it in 1981) between New York and Philadelphia as No. 1596.
When the Pennsylvania and New York Central merged in 1968 it came under the ownership of the new Penn Central. In 1971, Amtrak acquired the car, when it was converted to head end electrical power in May 1981 and renumbered 7426. It was later renumbered 7615 and in the summer of 1996 was named Glen Falls for use on Amtrak’s New York-Montreal Adirondack.
Retired by Amtrak in 2003, it was acquired by the Friends of the 261 and renamed the Lake Pepin. Railexco purchased the railcar in 2023 and renamed it Effingham in 2024.
The Effingham is based in St Louis, fully Amtrak certified, and available for charter nationwide. ***Available for lease FEB-OCT***
Franklin County - Coach
The Franklin County was constructed by the Budd Company of Philadelphia, PA in 1949 for the Norfolk and Western Railroad. Originally designed as a 10 roomette, 6 double bedroom sleeping car, it was sold to the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1963 and converted by Budd into a 72 seat snack bar coach. The Franklin County, now coach 1483, was passed to The Penn Central Transportation Company after a merger with the New York Central Railroad in 1969.
Later the coach was purchased by the State of Maryland for MARC commuter rail service between Washington, DC, Baltimore, and surrounding communities. After being retired by MARC, the 1483 entered excursion service, serving on the SAM Shortline in Georgia and on the Orlando Northwestern in Florida. Railexco acquired the Franklin County in 2023.
In 2024 the Franklin County was sold to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC. The N.C. Transportation Museum is a historic site, once home to Southern Railway’s largest steam locomotive repair facility in the southeast, and a museum featuring all types of transportation history – railroading, automotive, aviation, and more.
RXCX 5401 - Amfleet I Cafe Car
Railexco is proud to be the first private operator of Budd-build Amfleet equipment. We rostered one Amfleet I café. These cars were constructed in the early 1970’s and were Amtrak’s first attempt at modernization beginning the agency’s conversion to head end power. In regular service for nearly 50 years, the Amfleet design has proven itself as one of the most iconic, reliable, and comfortable staples of American passenger rail.
While the majority of Amfleet equipment is still in regular operation with Amtrak, most Amfleet I equipment is scheduled to be replaced over the next 10 years with modern fixed-trainsets.
Railexco acquired its RXCX 5401 in 2020.
Budd SPV-2000 Coach
The Budd SPV-2000 was a self-propelled diesel multiple unit railcar built by the Budd Company between 1978 and 1981 the Connecticut Department of Transportation. The design was a successor to Budd's popular Rail Diesel Car (RDC) but based on the body of the Amfleet I passenger car. However, the design struggled to win orders from customers and only 31 were constructed.
In 1994, the remaining 11 SPV-2000s owned by the Connecticut Department of Transportation were de-powered and converted to conventional locomotive hauled coaches for use on Shore Line East commuter service. Retired in 2004, they were used in occasional service by TSA, FEMA, and Amtrak.
Railexco acquired 7 SPV-2000 coaches in 2023. Two will be retained by Railexco. They will be overhauled into modern and comfortable 72 seat passenger coaches. The first overhauled Railexco SPV-2000 will enter service on the St Louis Polar Express in late 2023.
